Terminix
The broadest coverage and the strongest termite guarantee
After comparing 3 providers on five weighted factors, Terminix is our top pick,
best for termite protection with damage cover. Orkin is the stronger
choice for tricky or persistent infestations.
Pest control pricing is refreshingly comparable: most companies sell a quarterly plan covering the common crawling pests, with termites and wildlife priced separately. The real differences are the guarantee, the contract terms and how the local branch performs. We compare the majors so you can choose with eyes open.
How we chose
Every pest control provider here gets the same treatment: the HomeClerk research
team scores it on five weighted factors, the weights are published, and no provider can pay to move
up. Commissions never touch the math.
The brands set the playbook but your local branch delivers it, so check reviews for your branch specifically, not the national average. Then compare three things in writing: what pests the plan actually covers (German cockroaches and bed bugs are usually excluded), the re-treatment guarantee between visits, and what canceling costs.
Termites are a separate decision. If you are buying protection, understand whether you are paying for a treatment, a monitoring system, or a damage-repair guarantee: they are very different products at very different prices.
What the contract fine print hides
Initial-visit discounts usually require a 12-month commitment; canceling early claws the discount back.
Auto-renewal is standard; put the renewal date on your calendar if you only want a year.
Coverage exclusions matter more than inclusions: ask directly which pests are NOT covered.
Price increases at renewal are common; a phone call asking for the new-customer rate often works.
When you can skip the pros
Light, seasonal ant or spider pressure responds well to consumer baits and sealing entry points: try that before signing a plan. The pros earn their fee on recurring infestations, anything inside walls, rodents and everything termite-related. And one honest word: if a door-to-door rep is pressuring you to sign today, the price will be better tomorrow.
General pest plans typically run $45 to $80 per month billed quarterly, after an initial visit of $150 to $350. Termite protection is separate, usually $1,200 to $3,000 for treatment plus an annual plan. One-off treatments for a single problem run $150 to $400.
Do I need a plan, or just one treatment?
One persistent problem (ants every summer, say) often justifies a plan, because plans include free re-treatments between visits. A one-time issue like a single wasp nest is a one-time job. A company that refuses to sell one-off treatments is telling you something.
Are the treatments safe for kids and pets?
Modern treatments, applied correctly, are designed to be safe once dry, with technicians advising any re-entry times. If anyone in the home is pregnant, immune-compromised or chemically sensitive, ask for the product labels before booking; reputable companies hand them over without fuss.
What is the hardest pest to get rid of?
Bed bugs and German cockroaches top the list: both hide deep, reproduce fast, and shrug off DIY sprays. Termites cause the most expensive damage but respond well to professional bait systems and barrier treatments, which is why termite work is almost never a DIY job.
